Skyways House, Speke - Daylight Study

< Back

Skyways House is the new head office for Littlewoods Shop Direct located at the Estuary Commerce Park, Speke.

The head office inhabits a former aircraft hangar, Grade 2* listed, significant for the distinctive lamella space frame vaulted construction. Running a large portion of the hangar’s length are roof lights located centrally and to either side of the hangar.

dpa lighting consultants were commissioned to undertake an analysis of the sunlight penetration within the space and to make recommendations on methods of controlling any potential glare experienced due to direct sunlight within the office spaces.

A three-dimensional computer model was used to study and analyse the effects of direct sunlight within the interior of the building at the Winter Solstice, Summer Solstice and both the Spring and Autumn Equinoxes. From the generated results it was apparent that, under clear sky conditions, direct sunlight penetrated into the office space at all times of the year and that some method of sunlight control would be required to ensure a visually comfortable working environment.

Various different static and motorised solar shading options were proposed, along with their benefits and disadvantages, enabling the project team to make an informed decision on the most appropriate glare control method to install so as to be sympathetic with the Grade 2* listed lamella space frame construction of the original building.
