Diglis Basin, Worcester - Environmental Impact Assesement

< Back

The practice was involved in producing a study for a large housing company and reporting on the existing artificial lighting conditions and the likely impact on the local environment of a new housing development on the site. The land comprised light industrial units together with derelict warehouses and areas of car parking, with a riverside network passing through and around the site. The proposed site was particularly sensitive due to proximity to the River Severn and inner and outer basins, together with the associated ecological considerations and the nearby residential areas.

A day and night photographic and visual survey was conducted to examine the impact of the existing building and circulation lighting, where luminance and illuminance readings were also recorded. The survey identified many cases where floodlights were glary with the light poorly controlled and high levels of spill light detected on to adjacent areas.

The report demonstrated measures to mitigate the impact of street, building and pedestrian lighting, associated with the proposed residential area, which was clearly advantageous from a planning point of view.
