lighting consultants worked with our Arup Associates Architects for
this significant building forming part of the Stockley Park Development,
which was completed in the 1980's. The lighting had to create a soft,
friendly and welcoming environment throughout the circulation and social
spaces. Carefully controlled daylight provides a visual connection with
the outside world inside the central circulation core and also illumination
into the space. The art collection is of significance and the lighting
of the art formed an important part of the overall concept.
The glass entrance structure and restaurant zones formed two internally
lit beacons that reflect in the water body in front of the building.
The project had minimal external lighting so as not to waste energy
or pollute the environment, but its impact using the internally lit
spaces is still significant and a technique that has become more and
more prevalent as everyone has recognised the need to consider the environment.
