St. Luke's Church, Maidenhead

< Back

This project demonstrates the value that a good lighting design can provide, when working with a limited budget. A balance had to be struck between providing an aesthetically pleasing interior, where there were many features crying out to be lit, and the need to provide an appropriate level of functional downlighting to the Nave and Choir, considering that many of the congregation required a high level of light to read from.

Energy efficient linear fluorescent lighting was used to express the window openings at high level and the Altar wall, which was uplit with concealed lighting, to provide a visual termination to the interior.

Of particular decorative note was the large painted frieze above the pulpit and lectern, which was bathed in warm white light, from track mounted light fixtures. The congregation had commented that before the lighting project the frieze had been barely visible.
