IZ Restaurant, Dubai

< Back

IZ; a brand new, high end Indian restaurant at the Grand Hyatt, Dubai.

The design brief from Hyatt was to create a chic and intimate dining experience, the likes of which have never been experienced before in the Middle East.

Rich and varied textures, ambience, aromas, seclusion were the buzz words and in the centre of the space was to be the restaurants’ theatre – a sunken live cooking and preparation station with authentic Tandoor ovens.

The lighting design was a challenge in that the interior space is so varied with multi-levels, materials, vistas and areas of focus. The lighting needed to be discreet and compliment the space without being obvious, but at the same time provide the ambience, accent and functional lighting that the restaurant required.

Working very closely with the Client and Interior Designer, details were created to float tables, counters and changes in level with light. Discreet ceiling slots were employed to
hide tightly focused LED downlights to place settings. The backdrop of silver drapery, rough hewn masonry and timber slats are picked out with combination of cool and warm white lighting from perimeter concealment coves and contrasting in-ground close offset uplighting.
Ambient lighting is from luminaires above the ceiling level, focused onto hanging fabric banners, slowly cross-faded to give the illusion of movement. The lighting to the live cooking station is tucked up within the extractor hoods to put light only where it is needed and not trespass into the dining areas.

The whole of the lighting to the restaurant is controlled by an architectural dimming system, changing automatically through specific lighting scenes to suit the time of day and evening. Together with the latest high efficacy and long life luminaires, non operational times and restaurant cleaning times are also programmed into the system to make full advantage of the energy saving benefits of the lighting design.
