The
new Men's Shoe Salon at Harrods occupies a 7,200 sq ft, Kurt Geiger-branded
basement space, 50% larger than the previous area. Working in association
with designer's Callison, from their London office, dpa
lighting consultants have produced a lighting scheme that reinforces
the quality of both the interior design and the products that are on
display within the rectangular shaped sales area, with adjoining Exotics
Room, where bespoke shoes can be ordered.
dpa had to work with the existing coffered ceiling
arrangement with integrated concealed linear fluorescent lighting and
were challenged by the low floor to ceiling heights and no presence
of any natural light ingress. It was imperative to produce a brightly
lit space that appropriately revealed the light coloured material palette,
whilst providing definition to the merchandise. The coffer lighting
was a cool white colour temperature to offer a fresh and stimulating
relief to the space, whilst the small scaled recessed downlighting housed
a warm white metal halide lamp to reflect the warm tones of the shoes.
The careful selection of luminaire optics was critical, to coincide
with the dimensions of product displays and to focus light on to shoes
as opposed to providing a general wash across the sales floor, which
would have resulted in a flat and uninspiring result.
The perimeter shelving was highlighted with concealed T5 linear warm
white fluorescent luminaires and a feature glass chandelier was centralised
over the entrance doors to the Exotics Room. Integrated low level lighting
elements were designed in to the open-fronted steel steamer trunks.
The lighting project was delivered under 40 watts per sq metre, using
energy efficient lighting.
