Alexander Beleschenko was commisioned to design installations
for two pedestrian links at Canary Wharf.
The
lower ground floor provides access from the Jubilee
Line tube station to the new CitiGroup Offices. The
ground floor provides a link between the entrance lobbies
of the two different styles of the CitiGroup Towers.
The challenge for SBT Architects was to create a link
between the two different architectural styles to provide
visual stimulation and illuminate the space to fall
in line with the Group's Public art strategy.
The
designs evolved into continuous, full height back-lit
walls constructed from panels of opalescent laminated
glass with pieces of coloured glass bonded to it. Fluorescent
lamps illuminate the panels from behind, each individually
addressed by a digital operating system. In addition
there is a timed sequence that automatically fades the
lights on and off. Through these different variations
and intensities of light an appearance of movement is
created.
