Project:
Asda Stores Limited, Daylight Study

Asda Stores had a number of properties with a central day lit entrance space and they wanted to investigate how they could maximise the use of available daylight into the areas that did not directly benefit from natural light. A model of the daylight opening was constructed and tests carried out in the Bartlett School of Architecture’s artificial sky. We examined a number of configurations using baffles and reflectors to bounce the natural light into the non-daylit spaces adjacent to the atrium.

The study showed how daylight could be re-directed to the advantage of a wider area. The reflectors provide an additional benefit of reducing the daylight directly under the opening thus decreasing the contrast which assists on visual perception.
