Project:
The Duke Humphrey, Seldon and Arts Ends of the Bodleian Library, Oxford

As one of the most important libraries in the world the re-lighting of these areas presented a challenge to the practice. A balance had to be struck between conservation of the building, conservation of the books, the library staff, readers and visitors. All of which have very different needs and aspirations thus making this one of the most difficult projects the practice has been commissioned to undertake.

The solutions involved carefully concealed lighting elements that in no way damage the fabric of the building but enhance it visually together with reading lights in appropriate locations. The scheme is too complex to describe in detail but the pictures provide a flavour of the results and as with all the projects illustrated on this website we would delighted to provide in depth information on request.
