have worked on a number of projects for Eton College,
however the magnificent chapel represented the most
challenging to light.
A
series of concealed uplights provide the casual observer
with an opportunity to study, for the first time, the
fine fan vaulting of the main ceiling. Discretely hidden
track mounted spotlights bathe the altar and performance
area in warm light whilst the rich colours of the altar
tapestry are given added vibrancy by being picked out
using spotlights. Gothic style enclosures, designed
by the Architect, conceal luminaires which provide uplighting
to the stone columns and the main ceiling at the east
end of the chapel.
The
lighting of the many polished brass plaques, laid in
memory of the old Etonians who died in the two World
Wars, presented a particular challenge. It was resolved
by integrating a specially designed fibre optic fixture
into the back of the timber pews which were positioned
in front of the plaques.
