| The
practice was fortunate to work on re-lighting the Gilbert
Scott Memorial Chapel that was built in 1927. The lighting
project was conceived to increase light levels to the
pews; provide a flexible system for multiple uses of
the space, including worship and choral/orchestral performances;
enhance the architecture, minimizing visual intrusion;
and cause the least physical damage to the building
fabric.
The
lighting design incorporates 10 lighting components
operated on a preset dimming control system. All of
the light sources are tungsten halogen. Energy was not
a significant issue due to limited hours of use, but
colour, controllability, optical performance and luminaire
size were. The lighting solution included refurbishing
the original Gilbert Scott decorative pendant fixtures
with a more powerful light source and also raising them
by 1 metre to ensure that the front pews received sufficient
illumination. It was also essential to not to create
a floodlit environment, areas of darkness were equally
as important as the lit elements.
