Project:
Jesus College Chapel, Cambridge

The chapel at Jesus College presented the architect, Donald Insall and ourselves a major challenge. We had to balance the sensitivity and preservation of an important historic interior with its multitude of uses. The chapel is used in numerous configurations and for many different activities. As well as the direct client, English Heritage and the Diocese also had significant interest, which had to be carefully considered. The lighting requirements for each of the various activities in the differing orientation were carefully studied and appropriate solution evolved. To provide the necessary light for each activity considerable thought went into positioning lighting equipment and it's visual appearance. Wherever possible lighting was concealed from normal viewing angles.

To facilitate the complex uses, lighting elements were broken down into many different dimmed circuits and then connected to a scene set control system. Because of the quantity of scenes required, in addition to normal 12 button control plates, a touch screen with access to about 50 lighting scenarios was also incorporated into the installation thus providing easy access to control of many different lighting scenes. One additional piece of technology was also incorporated to help with greater flexibility and that was the use of a robotic spotlights remotely controlled from floor level.

The result of everyone's hard work is an excellent installation that meets the needs of varying uses.
