Project:
Radley College Chapel, Oxfordshire

In the 1990s, dpa designed the lighting for the chapel at Radley College, a public school in Oxfordshire. Recently we were invited to revisit the chapel and update the lighting to the newly-restored reredos, which is notable nationally and has considerable historical significance for the school.

Using modern lighting technology we were able to remove some of the more obtrusive elements of the existing lighting and provide new lighting to the reredos, alter and sanctuary area from a single lighting track fitted unobtrusively behind a column on each side. Spotlights with very narrow beams were used to highlight specific panels of the reredos from considered angles, in order to bring out the relief whilst avoiding casting unpleasent shadows. In order to keep things inconspicuous both the track and the light fittings on it were finished in a custom paint colour to match the brick walls.

A number of in-ground uplights were also fitted to the rear wall to provide a backdrop to the view of the reredos.

The result has been a visual enhancement of the reredos and alter, coupled with a reduction in the amount of visible equipment and a reduction in energy consumption.
