Project:
Blackpool Central Corridor

The Central Corridor forms one of the primary gateways into the centre of Blackpool. Landscape Architects, EDAW, were commissioned to transform the area from a series of rundown carparks and waste land into a multi-use area which would not only provide a befitting gateway into the town but also signify the ongoing regeneration of this seaside resort. The new landscape design includes much more than upgraded car parking; local residents have been given additional facilities including a children's play area, multi-use games pitch and also a new park with meandering pathways through the new soft landscaped areas. Two large climbing towers designed by artist Gordon Young provide a practical focal point together with a new challenge for both experienced and novice climbers.

The lighting equipment employed in the area needed to be robust enough to withstand the environmental demands present whilst also being able to be integrated into the landscape and not detract from the daytime scene. The lighting design focussed on providing safe pedestrian and motor vehicle illumination whilst also highlighting key landscape features and textures such as the climbing walls and the feature walls abutting the main road. Lighting levels and points of emphasis were designed so as to maintain the daytime visual hierarchy desired by the landscape designers and produce minimum light pollution.

dpa are proud to have been involved in the lighting design for the complete gateway area. The project represents another symbolic move forward in the overall masterplan to regenerate this exciting town and the area will benefit both local residents and tourists alike.
