| This
was part of a series of public realm initiatives funded
by North Somerset Council, which included parallel strategies
for lighting, public art, public realm materials, signage
and way finding.
By considering
the night time environment of the town in context, it
was intended that the lighting strategy should guide
all future decision-making by the council. As well as
making recommendations for specific lighting projects,
ways in which artificial lighting should be used throughout
the town were considered. Issues such as the colour
and direction of light, the effect of light on building
materials, and the use of appropriate luminaire and
lamp types, were part of the strategy.
Following
completion of the project, the local authority secured
£16 million of funding for lighting-related projects
from the Regional Development Authority.
