Johanna Medina, Senior Designer from our London Studio, was recently invited by Dr. Mirsini Trigoni from the London College of Fashion, University of the Arts, to deliver a one hour lecture to the students of the MA Fashion Retail Management.
The lecture was about the principles of lighting design, issues lighting designers take into consideration while designing a commercial/retail space, and an explanation to the students on the design process from concept to completion with some examples of our work. Techniques on how lighting can enhance and create an atmosphere within a space, creating a strong and positive experience for the customer but at the same time present the products correctly were discussed. For the case study, Johanna presented some examples of fashion stores that dpa had designed and explained the logic behind the specific lighting solutions.
dpa Designers Adam Busby, Declan Sullivan, Ashley Rogers and Veronica Lykou were delighted to participate in Ready, Steady, Light 2017, organised by The Society of Light and Lighting, in partnership with Rose Bruford College. As part of the challenge 14 teams were asked to design and set up a temporary exterior installation, using a limited range of equipment in only 180 minutes.
The dpa team were given six luminaires to light an allocated area which consisted of thick foliage and several trees. Their aim was to add depth, texture and drama to the natural, outdoor space. They added depth and perspective by uplighting trees in both the background and foreground. By lighting the trees and foliage they also highlighted their natural textures as well as casting interesting shadows. A blossom tree, lit with a single coloured LED luminaire, created a focal point and a playful element. Finally, with a large tree in the foreground put into silhouette with a luminaire placed behind the tree they added a sense of drama to the scheme. All light sources were concealed as much as possible to ensure the viewer would only see the lit effect, rather than being distracted by glare light points.

Many congratulations to Rachael Nicholls on winning the ’40under40 – Voices’ competition held on 23rd November 2016 at LuxLive 2016, and also to Shayne Grist who took part in the event.
Both Rachael and Shayne were asked to pitch a two-minute idea on the subject, “How can lighting save the world?”.
Rachael’s idea was to form a platform or organisation of lighting design professionals with the intention of making lighting design affordable and accessible for projects that benefit people.
In total six lighting designers took part, and after some tough questions from the judges, Rachael’s idea was selected as the winner!
We are delighted to announce that Deeksha Surendra has joined dpa’s Dubai studio as a Senior Designer further expanding our team in the Middle East.
Deeksha has in the past, worked in lighting design and architecture practices in India and UK. After graduating in architecture and having worked in architectural practices for a few years, Deeksha’s interest in the symbiotic nature of art and architecture led her to pursue a Master’s degree in a multidisciplinary art course in Edinburgh. It was here that she was introduced to lighting design, baking and running. Now she pursues at least 2 of the 3 at any given time. Deeksha is also a registered member of the Council of Architecture in India.
Shown above is an image that Deeksha has selected that is inspirational to her, and below a short verse that Deeksha has written about her chosen image.
At dawn, a bonfire is lit
A giant orb looming, in silence we gather,
A year has gone by, we await the beginning of another
With hope, love and light
