Nestled near Polzeath on Cornwall’s dramatic north coast, Hidden House lives up to its evocative name. Rather than imposing itself on the landscape, the home is carved into the surrounding topography, seamlessly embedding itself within the terrain instead of rising above it like a conventional contemporary build.

Responding sensitively to a palette of local materials and a soft, naturalistic setting, the external lighting scheme is deliberately restrained. Spike-mounted, low-level path lighting guides movement between the living and bedroom areas along mown pathways, enhancing the experience of outdoor circulation. With the living spaces positioned above the bedroom level, the design maximises sweeping views across the Cornish countryside with lighting maintaining a discreet presence within its environment.

During the day, expansive glazing allows natural light to penetrate deep into the interiors, blurring the boundaries between inside and out and creating a seamless connection to the landscape beyond. As evening falls, the architectural lighting scheme quietly comes into its own. Discreetly integrated and purposefully placed, it provides both functional illumination and subtle accent lighting, enhancing the rich textures of the natural stone, concrete and timber finishes that flow effortlessly from the exterior into the living spaces. The result is a carefully layered visual experience that reinforces the home’s strong connection to its setting, day and night.
