Working closely with RPW Interior Designers, along with both the local and international Marriott teams, dpa supported the transformation of the renovated Malta Marriott Resort & Spa in St. Julian’s, Malta. The redesign introduced fresh, contemporary public areas as well as elegantly updated rooms and suites.
A key feature of the project was the Atrio Lobby Bar & Restaurant, a speciality dining venue and events space housed within the site’s original historic building. Its restored interior and exterior details were carefully lit to celebrate the character and heritage of the building, designed in collaboration with local designers Blueprint Architecture + Design, led by Mark Camilleri.
The exterior lighting was designed to respond subtly yet strikingly to both the traditional architecture and the more contemporary elements of the wider hotel. Landscaping and terrace lighting were also considered integral, ensuring a seamless visual connection between the outdoor areas and the key interior spaces.
Within the hotel, the reimagined interiors express and reinterpret Maltese cultural and historical narratives through materiality, texture, and refined spatial planning. The lighting design supports this vision by highlighting distinctive architectural and decorative elements with warm, fresh tones. These gently shift throughout the day, energising the spaces during busy daylight hours before transitioning to softer, more tranquil lighting in the evening, reflecting the peaceful character of Balluta Bay that the hotel overlooks.
