Mandarin Oriental, Vienna, Austria

Situated within Vienna’s historic Ringstrasse, Mandarin Oriental, Vienna occupies a former early‑20th‑century courthouse—an Art Nouveau landmark designed by architect Alfred Keller.

Following a meticulous six‑year transformation, the once austere civic building has been reimagined as a warm, welcoming five‑star hotel. The property now comprises 138 guestrooms and suites, additional private residences, four dining venues, a gym, and a subterranean spa, carefully integrated within the historic fabric.

Designed by Goddard Littlefair and Humbert & Poyet, the interiors blend preserved Art Nouveau features – grand staircases, wrought‑iron detailing, and formal symmetry – with contemporary design. Drawing on Vienna’s Secessionist heritage, the spaces are characterised by calm palettes, bespoke furnishings, and a language of understated luxury.

Complementing the interiors, the lighting design by dpa lighting consultants is led by restraint, warmth, and architectural reverence. Light is used to enhance rather than compete with the building’s historic character, combining soft ambient illumination with carefully placed accent lighting to celebrate key elements such as the grand staircase and Art Nouveau detailing.

Upon entering the hotel’s main lobby, guests encounter a captivating lighting installation composed of delicate glass spheres that appear to float like bubbles of light. This glowing feature softens the historic architecture, transforming the once austere courthouse entrance into a warm and inviting threshold. The interplay of decorative and concealed lighting continues throughout the lobby and lounge, where illumination accentuates the elegant radial ceiling and enhances the opulent interior atmosphere.

Descending into the spa, guests are immersed in an underground sanctuary of calm and rejuvenation. Spanning 700 square metres, the spa features seven treatment rooms, a sauna, a steam bath, a 24-hour fitness centre, and one of Vienna’s largest indoor swimming pools. Using tuneable white lighting technology, the design responds dynamically to guests’ needs – invigorating, cool whites energise the early morning ambience around the pool and gym, gradually transitioning to softer amber tones by evening to promote relaxation.

At the heart of the hotel lies the F&B area, set beneath an impressive, glazed roof that floods the space with natural light. This area seamlessly unites Atelier 7 The Café, Atelier 7 Brasserie, Atelier Izakaya & Bar, and the fine dining restaurant Le Sept. A refined integration of decorative fixtures and discreet, tuneable white lighting allows the atmosphere to evolve effortlessly from bright morning breakfasts to elegant evening dining and into the intimate sophistication of late-night service.
