Westminster Abbey was one of the Practice’s early landmark projects. Derek Phillips the founder of dpa lighting consultants won a competition to design the external lighting of the Abbey in 1965. The scheme, carefully designed to express the architecture, used what was then cutting edge technology in the form of linear Tungsten halogen lamps, with appropriate fixtures to direct the light where it was needed. The scheme provided impact, depth, subtlety and respect for the architecture. This scheme has subsequently been replaced with more contemporary lamp technology, and we believe that some of the qualities of the 1965 scheme have sadly been lost.
