Park Hyatt Kuala Lumpur: Designing a Sense of Place
Perched within Merdeka 118, Park Hyatt Kuala Lumpur offers a contemporary interpretation of Malaysian hospitality, bringing together modern luxury with the rich cultural heritage of its setting. At the heart of the interior design by GA is a reimagining of the traditional Malay Kampung House, expressed through natural materials, craftsmanship, texture and a strong connection to place.
In the accompanying video interview, Corinna Galdies of GA reflects on the design thinking behind the hotel and the ambition to create an experience that feels both contemporary and deeply rooted in its Malaysian context.
For dpa lighting consultants, supporting this vision meant developing a lighting scheme that would reinforce the hotel’s sense of place while enhancing the guest experience. Rather than simply illuminating the interiors, light was carefully integrated to reveal the character of materials, emphasise architectural details and create a series of changing atmospheres as guests move through the hotel.
Warm timber, textured surfaces and crafted details are subtly brought forward through layers of architectural and decorative lighting. In the Arrival Lobby, recessed uplighting and softly backlit elements establish a quiet sense of drama, while across Level 75, carefully positioned accent lighting draws attention to the intricate batik-inspired brass screens and bespoke elements of the interior.

This considered approach continues throughout the hotel, with light helping to define the transition between spaces and atmospheres. On the Wellness Floor, softly illuminated arches create a more tranquil environment, while in the guestrooms, discreetly integrated lighting allows the interiors and panoramic views of Kuala Lumpur to remain the focus.

The relationship between light and material was particularly important. A warm colour temperature was selected to complement the timber, metalwork and textures throughout the interiors, creating an atmosphere that feels intimate and residential rather than overly illuminated.

For dpa, the lighting is ultimately part of the wider design journey. Working closely with GA, the aim was to create moments of focus and subtle transitions that naturally guide guests through the spaces, while allowing the architecture, interiors, craftsmanship and views to speak for themselves.
The result is a lighting design that is deliberately understated yet fundamental to the experience – revealing the warmth and texture of the interiors, strengthening the connection to Malaysian culture and helping Park Hyatt Kuala Lumpur glow from within.
