Hackney Town Hall Wins Building Back Better Platinum Award!

We were extremely pleased to find out in early July that our project, Hackney Town Hall, had won a Platinum Award in the inaugural ‘Build Back Better’ awards.

Over the last 10 years Hackney Town Hall has undergone an extensive refurbishment of all the interior spaces, the final phase of which was completed on the building’s 80th anniversary. dpa worked closely with the client team, the project architects Hawkins Brown, and design consultants Turner Bates, to develop sensitive and appropriate lighting solutions for this Grade II listed Art Deco building.

The work included the refurbishment of existing Art Deco heritage luminaires with Madson Black, the addition of newly designed and manufactured luminaries in the same Art Deco style, and general discreet architectural lighting and dimming controls throughout the public areas. A phase of the work included the repurposing of two external dis-used courtyards into two PTFE roof enclosed multi-function events spaces.

In the development of the lighting design there was an emphasis in integrating new lighting technology, energy efficiency, refurbishment of the existing to a very high quality, and integration of electrical light with daylight. All of these elements ticked the boxes for ‘Building Back Better’, and this was recognised by the judges. The judges said that it was a “beautiful refurbishment in keeping with the age and setting of a public building. The judges sited the attention to detail and a superb integration of daylight and artificial light.”
