Following recent success at the AHEAD Europe Awards, dpa are thrilled to share that The OWO, London has received an “Award of Merit” at the 2025 IALD Awards, held on 7th May 2025 in Las Vegas. As the lighting industry’s longest running and most respected accolades, recognition from the International Association of Lighting Designers is a true honour.

A project of this scale and historical importance demands the expertise of an exceptional team. dpa were fortunate to collaborate with Raffles London at The OWO, Architect EPR, and several world-renowned Interior Design studios. Like any ambitious undertaking, the success of The OWO was made possible through strong collaboration and seamless communication across disciplines.

To see this iconic building brought back to life with such care, precision, and vision, and to have that effort acknowledged by the IALD is incredibly special.

We’re thrilled to announce the promotions of Deeksha Surendra, Ashley Maxwell, and Anuhas Jayakody — a reflection of their hard work, growth, and outstanding contributions to dpa.

Deeksha and Ashley have both been promoted to Associate.
Deeksha began her journey with dpa in our Dubai studio and has been a key member of the Oxfordshire team since 2017. Ashley joined dpa nearly seven years ago, transitioning from a different career path. Working on a diverse mix of significant projects across multiple sectors from Concept to Completion, Ashley and Deeksha have both contributed significantly to our success and growth.

Anuhas, now in his second year at dpa, has quickly become a valued member of the team. We’re pleased to announce his promotion to Senior Designer, recognising both his talent and his continued contributions to our projects.

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the [d]arc Awards, dpa collaborated with Radiant Architectural Lighting to deliver a vibrant, playful lighting installation centred around the theme of “10.” The result? A larger-than-life, hot pink, two-tier birthday cake complete with ten stylised glowing candles!

All lighting equipment was discreetly housed inside the cake, with the bottom tier featuring micro-perforations allowing RGB light to shine through its surface. Each candle was lit from within by a narrow-beam, colour-changing spotlight creating a flickering flame effect.

An interactive twist brought the installation to life — a microphone connected to the lighting control system allowed guests to “blow out” the candles. This triggered a dramatic lighting change, deactivating the candles and activating hidden spotlights aimed at a suspended mirror ball, scattering sparkling light across the venue in a celebratory moment of pure joy.

dpa lighting consultants have developed the lighting design for Ilma, a new superyacht by The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection. The yacht, which embarked on its maiden voyage on 2nd September 2024, forms part of an expansion of The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection whose first vessel, Evrima, launched in October 2022.

We are delighted to share news of further awards for dpa project One & Only One Za’abeel, Dubai, UAE. The project picked up awards in the Event Spaces, Guestrooms, and Hotel Newbuild categories as well as the Bar, Club or Lounge category for Sphere, and Restaurant category for StreetXO at the AHEAD MEA 2024 design awards.

 

We are delighted to share that four dpa projects are finalists in the Light Middle East Awards 2025.

Both The OWO, London and The BoTree, London are finalists in the Project of the Year International category while One & Only One Za’abeel, Dubai and Palace Dubai Creek Harbour Hotel are finalists in the Project of the Year MEA category. Winners will be announced at the awards ceremony on 16th January at the Dubai World Trade Centre!

We are thrilled that dpa project IO House has won the ‘Best use of Smart Technology’ category in the British Home Awards 2024!

In close collaboration with the Client and design team, the innovative smart home by SMC delivers a family home filled with surprising lighting elements to reflect the families personality and playfulness, whilst also responding to the open plan architecture and extension of the living space into the courtyards and landscaped gardens. Unexpected lighting elements, such as backlit onyx walls, and a twinkly green wall are all programmable from an app, allowing the family to create personalised patterns and flashing light sequences.

Congratulations to Intern Samuel Walker on receiving the highly prestigious Jonathan Spiers Scholarship Award 2023.  Samuel, who will be the last of the scholarship winners, received the award on 25th October at the Spiers Major London Studio. Beginning in 2012, the scholarship was created to provide 10 years of support to students of architecture aspiring to enter the Architectural Lighting Design profession.

We are happy to share that two of our projects,  Anita Lounge & Bar – Intercontinental Rome Ambasciatori Palace, Rome and BYRD – Hart Shoreditch Hotel, London have been shortlisted for the Ahead Awards Europe 2023 in the Bar, Club or Lounge category. The awards ceremony is due to take place on 17th November 2023 at Evolution, London so we are keeping our fingers crossed!

 

 

With 8 months to go until her maiden voyage, Cunard, Carnival and the design teams visited the Fincantieri shipyard to see build progress of the glorious Queen Anne.

We thought it would be really interesting to share images from NASA’s (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) incredible James Webb Space Telescope as they are simply amazing and, in some ways, hard for non astronomers like ourselves, to really comprehend. There is lots of information available on the NASA website and many other sites, should you wish to research further. The telescope is a partnership between NASA, the ESA (European Space Agency) and CSA (Canadian Space Agency). The first images to be released happened about a year ago in July 2022 and further images have been released over the last year which are the ones we have all seen published.

We understand the James Webb Space Telescope fundamentally detects infrared radiation, emitted by distant stars, planets and gas clouds and because of its incredible sensitivity can see light from billions of years ago in deepest space. The science is inspiring, the technology phenomenal and the images spectacular!

This video tours a portion of the Rho Ophiuchi cloud complex, the closest star-forming region to Earth. The image was taken to celebrate the first anniversary of the start of science operations for NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope.

dpa Oxfordshire decided to invest in solar panels as our large, steep-pitched, south-facing roof was ideal for an efficient installation. As well as hopefully being economically advantageous, we really liked the idea of reducing our Carbon Footprint. We decided not to have a battery but to sell back excess electricity as and when we produce more energy than required. Being an office generally occupied from 8 am to 7 pm, it is an ideal application. As you will see, we are delighted with our first full month’s results producing more electricity than we are consuming. Of course, we are now in the British Summer and results in the Winter will obviously not be the same, but we are very optimistic about this investment and the carbon emissions we have saved.

 

dpa have been working in collaboration with Norbert Weickenmeier and Weickenmeier, Kunz + Partner Architects for many years now, and we are proud to announce that Neue Balan, Campus der Ideen, Balanstrasse, Munich received an “Award of Commendation” in last week’s German Urban Development Prize 2023 at the Academy of Arts in Berlin. Congratulations to the project team for this fantastic achievement.

It gives us great pleasure to announce that dpa project Pilmour House, St Andrews Links Trust Headquarters was a winner at the 2023 RIAS Architectural Awards last week, being the only commercial/office scheme to receive such an award. The project has already won awards at the DIA Awards 2022, the Scottish Design Awards 2022 and the Civic Trust Awards 2023. “Fourth Wall”,  featured at the Darc Awards 2023 on 30th March at Fabric, London, was a collaboration between dpa lighting, ELR (Engineered Lighting Revolution) and Truelux.   The fully immersive installation was designed to put the viewer in the place of their favourite actors by transporting them into some of the most iconically lit moments in film history by bathing the participant in various colour palettes from the rich history of the silver screen. The inspiration for the installation and for each ‘Scene’ came from different lighting techniques used throughout the history of cinematography to convey a wide-ranging sense of moods and emotions to the viewer. Unique layers of light were used to set the mood within the installation whilst specific colours, lighting angles and effects were tailored to each genre to set the scene for …Horror of the 1930’s …Hollywood Musicals …1920’s Film Noir …Science Fiction Movies …Classic Action Film.

We are delighted to share that the Fairmont Taghazout Bay, Morocco has won the “Landscaping and Outdoor Spaces” category at the AHEAD MEA 2022 Awards.

The Fairmont Taghazout Bay is a coastal luxury five-star resort that sits within the beautiful Taghazout Bay. Its breath-taking views and beautiful gardens link the various hotel and F&B elements with an adjoining Fairmont operated villa complex within the overall site.

The elegant interiors designed by Wimberly Interiors connect beautifully with the outside scene, dovetailing with terraces and other spaces to reinforce the seamless inside-outside aspect of the spaces.

We are delighted to announce that dpa project, St Andrews Links Trust HQ, New Pilmour House has won Best Commercial/Non-Domestic Award at the Dundee Institute of Architects Design Awards 2022 (the DIA is a local chapter of the RIAS – Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland). Designed by architects Nicoll Russell Studios, Broughty Ferry,  the project was also “Highly Commended” for Interior Design, and the associated Balgove Starter Box by the same team won for “Best Use of Timber”. This recent accolade is part of a list of recent successes, which include: a “Pride of Place” Award for Best Commercial Project from St Andrews Preservation Trust and Best Commercial/Office/Hotel Project in the Scottish Design Awards. The project is also shortlisted for the Architects Journal Awards and the Civic Trust Awards; we are looking forward to hearing the outcome of these shortly! dpa lighting consultants are immensely proud to have worked on P&O Cruises newest ship Arvia, the sister ship to Iona, which departed the Meyer Werft shipyard, Germany bound for Eemshaven, Netherlands for her conveyancing on 8th November 2022 and is scheduled for delivery during December 2022. dpa have been in collaboration with P&O Cruises and working in association with Jestico + Whiles, Partner Ship Design and Richmond International, designers of the front of house guest areas for this new 184,700 tonnes ship.

Like Iona, Arvia is powered by Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), therefore significantly reducing carbon emissions.  At 345 metres long, Arvia will have an operating capacity of 5,200 guests and 1,800 crew, designed to capture unprecedented panoramic views across the ever-changing seascape, at every available opportunity. She will be the first ship of her kind to feature a Sky Dome with retractable roof, spanning a vast performance and recreation area at the top of the ship. Altogether, Arvia will be the epitome of a sunshine resort sailing year-round to the warmest climates.

We are delighted that St Andrews Links Trust Headquarters, Scotland has recently been shortlisted in the DIA Awards 2022.

 

Nick, Richard and David are delighted to announce that Stephanie Harris and Tim Leeding have been made Associates at our Oxfordshire studio and Louise Mari Santiago has been made Associate at our Dubai studio .  Stephanie, Tim and Louise have been with dpa for a long time, contributing to our success and working on a wide variety of projects within the Clifton and Dubai studios, Tim having worked in both studios. At dpa, we pride ourselves on developing our team and retaining talent within the Practice;  these promotions further reflect this approach which we believe to be so important.

 

We are delighted to welcome Vidisha Tolia, who has joined our London Studio as a Designer.

We are very proud to announce that Ingo Kalecinski, Associate based in our London Studio, has won a competition at the London Design Festival 2022 for his design of a GOBO projection. The challenge set by WE-EF Lighting was to create an illustration that addresses “how design can help create environments that foster well-being and enrich our lives”.

“The inspiration for the design came from west-facing building façades that I often observe from my living room when they reflect the sunset against the eastern sky above them that is already immersed in darkness. These Glazed facets pick out this magical, warm glow and turn into temporary beacons of light dotted into the otherwise dark concrete jungle surrounding them.

I have always been intrigued to find out what these intense pockets of light must feel like close-up. Ironically once you have made your way over there, they would inevitably disappear as your perspective changes and the sun moves along its path – never to be caught.

The idea was to capture this phenomenon of colour and the emotional uplift it provides within this secluded forecourt and to preserve the effect for an extended period throughout the evening, well past sunset.

The projected image creates an abstract perception of the courtyard space for the viewers standing within it by replicating shadow outlines of surrounding architecture and planting. These silhouettes seamlessly frame the mesmerising and uplifting warm gradient glow of the sun setting.”

I see a secondary vantage point for passers-by on the trains above who may only catch a short glimpse of the projection, making it even more mystical and perhaps something to look out for again next time around. “ Ingo Kalecinski, Associate, dpa lighting consultants.

dpa were delighted to be commissioned to produce the lighting design for OKKU,  an award-winning Japanese Restaurant, operating in Riyadh. The original and innovative space features two distinct floors where guests are greeted by Samurai warriors, a signature Jelly Fish Tank, a giant Japanese Bell and exquisite interior detailing to compliment the food and beverage.

dpa were very proud to work again with OKKU on another iconic restaurant and worked closely with the design team and client to bring out the richness and detail of the interiors with light, in a subtle and sympathetic manner.

Custodians of the seven public golf courses at St. Andrews, including the Old Course, St. Andrews Links Trust, have recently moved into their new headquarters building, Pilmour House. Designed by Nicoll Russell Studios (NRS) and completed in Autumn 2021, the building is now fully occupied and operational. dpa lighting consultants were delighted to be invited by NRS to provide lighting design for the interior, exterior facades, landscape and Gatehouse.

This is the first SIRO hotel located in Boka Place, Porto Montenegro. The brand new hospitality brand from Kerzner, SIRO (Strength, Inclusive, Reflection and Original), will offer a wellbeing experience for guests and residents alike, with a 96 key hotel sitting alongside 144 managed residences.  We have been working closely with Atellior on the interior areas, Holder Mathias Architects and Arhi.pro on the external architecture and Gillespies on the landscape design for this exciting development, due for completion at the end of 2023.

We have pleasure sharing the visual below of the magnificent Old War Office building on Whitehall, as well as a film produced by groundworks contractor Toureen. Both demonstrate the impressive scale and intricate detail of this Grade II* listed building which is being repurposed as a flagship 120-bedroom Raffles Hotel along with 85 Branded Residences, 11 Restaurants and Bars, and other extensive amenities launching as The OWO this winter.

We have been working alongside our client Westminster Development Services, architects EPR, interior designers The Office of Thierry Despont from New York (appointed for the hotel design), and London-based Goddard Littlefair for the hotel spa. Interior designers 1508 London designed the interiors for the residential public areas and the interior base finish for the residences. In addition, we have worked with Aecom, who were responsible for the building services. The Main Contractor is Ardmore and Toureen as specialist contractor.

The final images show the recently finished lighting trials that dpa completed during the design period. These tested the exterior lighting design ideas and techniques over several nights, with the help of abseilers, to fine-tune the lighting locations with the guidance of dpa’s design team. We are very much looking forward to realising the entire lit façade when the project completes this winter.

The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection – Ilma

dpa lighting consultants are currently developing the lighting design for Ilma, the newly announced  superyacht by The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection.  The newbuild, which will set sail in 2024, forms part of an expansion of The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection with their first vessel, Evrima, set to launch this summer and Luminara to follow in 2025.  The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection will take the exceptional guest service and design excellence, that The Ritz-Carlton is known for, to the seas, featuring multiple restaurants and bars, a marina terrace and mezzanine, Ritz-Carlton Spa, Ritz Kids space, and an expanded bow.

As with all projects, close collaboration is paramount and the strength of our relationships with The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, AD Associates and Chantiers de l’Atlantique are proving immensely important in this very exciting venture.

One of the main challenges for the team is to provide innovative solutions at the design stage, knowing that the launch of the ship is years ahead, in a competitive market. Therefore, we strive to provide original lighting ideas and detailing, in close coordination with AD Associates, that will help define The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection as a leader in superyacht design and the luxury cruising sector.

Minimising energy use and impact on the environment is a high priority for all clients, particularly in the cruise industry.  As well as designing efficiency into the lighting scheme through the use of low energy light sources, an architectural lighting control system will be used throughout the public areas.  The lighting scene setting will be programmed to ensure each of the spaces onboard Ilma appear at their most elegant day and night.  Time clock controlled lighting adjustments linked to the ship’s clock will provide imperceptible changes to the scenes throughout the day and into the evening, ensuring energy use is minimised autonomously.  Further, all 228 suites will feature a pre-programmed lighting control system, linked with other room services, to deliver an intuitive and comfortable guest experience at all times of day.
