We are delighted to welcome Vidisha Tolia, who has joined our London Studio as a Designer.

We are very proud to announce that Ingo Kalecinski, Associate based in our London Studio, has won a competition at the London Design Festival 2022 for his design of a GOBO projection. The challenge set by WE-EF Lighting was to create an illustration that addresses “how design can help create environments that foster well-being and enrich our lives”.

“The inspiration for the design came from west-facing building façades that I often observe from my living room when they reflect the sunset against the eastern sky above them that is already immersed in darkness. These Glazed facets pick out this magical, warm glow and turn into temporary beacons of light dotted into the otherwise dark concrete jungle surrounding them.

I have always been intrigued to find out what these intense pockets of light must feel like close-up. Ironically once you have made your way over there, they would inevitably disappear as your perspective changes and the sun moves along its path – never to be caught.

The idea was to capture this phenomenon of colour and the emotional uplift it provides within this secluded forecourt and to preserve the effect for an extended period throughout the evening, well past sunset.

The projected image creates an abstract perception of the courtyard space for the viewers standing within it by replicating shadow outlines of surrounding architecture and planting. These silhouettes seamlessly frame the mesmerising and uplifting warm gradient glow of the sun setting.”

I see a secondary vantage point for passers-by on the trains above who may only catch a short glimpse of the projection, making it even more mystical and perhaps something to look out for again next time around. “ Ingo Kalecinski, Associate, dpa lighting consultants.

We have pleasure sharing the visual below of the magnificent Old War Office building on Whitehall, as well as a film produced by groundworks contractor Toureen. Both demonstrate the impressive scale and intricate detail of this Grade II* listed building which is being repurposed as a flagship 120-bedroom Raffles Hotel along with 85 Branded Residences, 11 Restaurants and Bars, and other extensive amenities launching as The OWO this winter.

We have been working alongside our client Westminster Development Services, architects EPR, interior designers The Office of Thierry Despont from New York (appointed for the hotel design), and London-based Goddard Littlefair for the hotel spa. Interior designers 1508 London designed the interiors for the residential public areas and the interior base finish for the residences. In addition, we have worked with Aecom, who were responsible for the building services. The Main Contractor is Ardmore and Toureen as specialist contractor.

The final images show the recently finished lighting trials that dpa completed during the design period. These tested the exterior lighting design ideas and techniques over several nights, with the help of abseilers, to fine-tune the lighting locations with the guidance of dpa’s design team. We are very much looking forward to realising the entire lit façade when the project completes this winter.

The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection – Ilma

dpa lighting consultants are currently developing the lighting design for Ilma, the newly announced  superyacht by The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection.  The newbuild, which will set sail in 2024, forms part of an expansion of The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection with their first vessel, Evrima, set to launch this summer and Luminara to follow in 2025.  The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection will take the exceptional guest service and design excellence, that The Ritz-Carlton is known for, to the seas, featuring multiple restaurants and bars, a marina terrace and mezzanine, Ritz-Carlton Spa, Ritz Kids space, and an expanded bow.

As with all projects, close collaboration is paramount and the strength of our relationships with The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, AD Associates and Chantiers de l’Atlantique are proving immensely important in this very exciting venture.

One of the main challenges for the team is to provide innovative solutions at the design stage, knowing that the launch of the ship is years ahead, in a competitive market. Therefore, we strive to provide original lighting ideas and detailing, in close coordination with AD Associates, that will help define The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection as a leader in superyacht design and the luxury cruising sector.

Minimising energy use and impact on the environment is a high priority for all clients, particularly in the cruise industry.  As well as designing efficiency into the lighting scheme through the use of low energy light sources, an architectural lighting control system will be used throughout the public areas.  The lighting scene setting will be programmed to ensure each of the spaces onboard Ilma appear at their most elegant day and night.  Time clock controlled lighting adjustments linked to the ship’s clock will provide imperceptible changes to the scenes throughout the day and into the evening, ensuring energy use is minimised autonomously.  Further, all 228 suites will feature a pre-programmed lighting control system, linked with other room services, to deliver an intuitive and comfortable guest experience at all times of day.

We were extremely pleased to find out in early July that our project, Hackney Town Hall, had won a Platinum Award in the inaugural ‘Build Back Better’ awards.

Over the last 10 years Hackney Town Hall has undergone an extensive refurbishment of all the interior spaces, the final phase of which was completed on the building’s 80th anniversary. dpa worked closely with the client team, the project architects Hawkins Brown, and design consultants Turner Bates, to develop sensitive and appropriate lighting solutions for this Grade II listed Art Deco building.

The work included the refurbishment of existing Art Deco heritage luminaires with Madson Black, the addition of newly designed and manufactured luminaries in the same Art Deco style, and general discreet architectural lighting and dimming controls throughout the public areas. A phase of the work included the repurposing of two external dis-used courtyards into two PTFE roof enclosed multi-function events spaces.

In the development of the lighting design there was an emphasis in integrating new lighting technology, energy efficiency, refurbishment of the existing to a very high quality, and integration of electrical light with daylight. All of these elements ticked the boxes for ‘Building Back Better’, and this was recognised by the judges. The judges said that it was a “beautiful refurbishment in keeping with the age and setting of a public building. The judges sited the attention to detail and a superb integration of daylight and artificial light.”

dpa Senior Associate Iain Carlile looks at the latest papers from Lighting Research and Technology papers that range from road illumination to the non-visual effects of light.

This article was published in the Society of Light and Lighting’s newsletter ‘Light Lines’  January/February 2020 edition. To view this article in full please click here.

A paper by Fotios reviews the weightings made by the CIE in document CIE115:2010 in order to determine the P-class lighting design recommendations. P-class concerns lighting for minor roads, referred to in the UK as ‘access roads, residential roads and associated areas, footpaths and cycletracks’. CIE115:2010 gives a number of parameters (travel speed, traffic volume, traffic composition, parked vehicles, ambient luminance and facial recognition) with weighting factors, with the summed weighting factor identifying a particular lighting class with average and minimum illuminance values.

From a literature review Fotios identifies that some of these parameters are relevant due to their association with a pedestrian RTC (road traffic collision). However, the review was unable to substantiate the class selection process, due to a number of factors: little evidence of lighting needed to offset risks such as differing speed of traffic, whether weighting factors and intervals between options are relevant, and if parameter weightings are relevant.
Further, Fotios notes that if the primary aim is to light for pedestrians, since the weighting factors tend to focus on the chance of a pedestrian RTC, with other factors not being represented (for example, discerning obstacles and hazards, identifying movement of other pedestrians) then the weighting system gives false confidence to designers that their design is meeting pedestrians’ needs.

Figueiro et al present the results of a case study investigating the application of lighting for non-visual effects on a building’s occupants. The authors note that laboratory studies have shown that (depending on the time of exposure) a sufficient amount of shortwavelength light and exposure duration can entrain or disrupt the synchrony between our biological clock and our local position on Earth. They have also shown that alertness can be enhanced both day and night by light across the entire visible spectrum.

Using a novel luminaire designed to promote entrainment and alertness, field tests of light exposure were conducted in office environments. The results revealed that tailored lighting interventions can help entrain occupants and increase alertness during working hours (when properly applied). The authors note that the luminaire used in the study might not be ideal, but was practical and inexpensive to implement, helping to bridge between laboratory studies and field applications.

Siemiginowska and Iskra-Golec’s paper presents the results of a laboratory experiment investigating blue light exposure and EEG (electroencephalographic) activity, to see if a person’s chronotype could moderate the effect of monochromatic blue light. The authors note that some previous studies have reported higher alertness during blue light exposure, while other studies have failed to demonstrate this effect.
An experiment was conducted in which a group of 30 young male volunteers were exposed to two different lighting conditions of comparable luminance on room surfaces at eye level when seated. These were: monochromatic blue light (MBL) at 460nm, and polychromatic white light (PWL). After four hours of exposure, EEG measurements were taken in the morning, afternoon and evening.

It was found that the blue light effect differs depending on the length of exposure and an individual’s chronotype. From the results of the experiment it was found that the blue light effect differs depending on the length of exposure and an individual’s chronotype. MBL had a significant influence on EEG activity in the afternoon hours in morning-orientated types. The authors note that the observed effect was only based on a study of young men, limited to a particular time of the day (afternoon hours) and chronotype (morning type), and as such the results should be treated carefully.

We are delighted to share the news that Barry Hannaford’s achievements have been recognised by the Light Middle East Awards for his ‘Outstanding Contribution to the Lighting Industry’.

Barry Hannaford started his lighting design career 47 years ago with Thorn Lighting at a time when Thorn had a world class research facility and educational programme. This solid foundation in the science of light was then further enhanced and expanded with positions at the London Borough of Greenwich Lighting Department, Concord Lighting Ltd and ERCO where he was the UK Technical Manager.  During the first 15 years of Barry’s career working within industry, Barry’s passion for the medium of light evolved and using the science that he had learnt his creative flare developed.

Wanting to fully exploit light within the built environment to provide building owners with the very best solutions, he joined Lighting Design Partnership in 1985 and was instrumental in the development of lighting design as a profession. In fact todays lighting designers owe a lot to LDP’s promotion of the discipline through the 1980’s, in which Barry played a pivotal role.

Barry joined dpa lighting consultants in 1996 as a Partner and established the London office with great success.  The Middle East has always been important to dpa with projects such as The Sheraton on the Creek from 1977 and on the back of various commissions in the region and in particular the Grand Hyatt in Dubai, dpa decided to set up an office in Dubai in 2003. Barry moved there in 2004 and remains an owner and Director of the Practice today.

Barry has been involved with literally thousands of projects all over the world, there are so many worthy of note it is difficult to isolate a few without feeling others should have been mentioned, but a selection of Barry’s completed projects are:

Barry’s extreme attention to detail and passion for understanding the science of light and using/sharing this knowledge creatively, is what makes him so special and so deserving of this award.

Looking at a selection of the latest online papers from the Lighting Research & Technology journal, Iain Carlile from our London studio summarises the findings from four papers which look at how colour temperature and lighting method affect our view of space and objects.

8 St James’s Square was an ill proportioned and over scaled existing inter-war building which has now been redeveloped into 65,500 ft² of prime office space. The new sustainable office building is situated in the exclusive St James’s district of Westminster, overlooking the historical St James’s Square Garden. The entrance leads into a reception space which spans the full width of the elevation. Eric Parry Architects used a rich palette of materials including walnut, leather, marble, lacquer that evoke the local traditional gentleman’s clubs of the area. The central marble lined lift shaft makes excellent use of natural daylight, allowing light to penetrate deep into the core of the building.

dpa worked in collaboration with Eric Parry Architects to deliver the lighting design to the external façades, reception, lift lobby, feature lift shaft and semi-scenic lift cars and external terraces. The principles were to create a warm welcoming well-lit space that highlighted key features while revealing the rich material pallet. The reception was lit with various layers of light that included bespoke linear inground uplights and pendants. No ceiling recessed luminaires were used within the reception and lift lobby to respect the clean lines of the detailed ceiling profile.

Johanna Medina, Senior Designer from our London Studio, was recently invited by Dr. Mirsini Trigoni from the London College of Fashion, University of the Arts, to deliver a one hour lecture to the students of the MA Fashion Retail Management.

The lecture was about the principles of lighting design, issues lighting designers take into consideration while designing a commercial/retail space, and an explanation to the students on the design process from concept to completion with some examples of our work. Techniques on how lighting can enhance and create an atmosphere within a space, creating a strong and positive experience for the customer but at the same time present the products correctly were discussed. For the case study, Johanna presented some examples of fashion stores that dpa had designed and explained the logic behind the specific lighting solutions.

dpa Designers Adam Busby, Declan Sullivan, Ashley Rogers and Veronica Lykou were delighted to participate in Ready, Steady, Light 2017, organised by The Society of Light and Lighting, in partnership with Rose Bruford College. As part of the challenge 14 teams were asked to design and set up a temporary exterior installation, using a limited range of equipment in only 180 minutes.

The dpa team were given six luminaires to light an allocated area which consisted of thick foliage and several trees. Their aim was to add depth, texture and drama to the natural, outdoor space. They added depth and perspective by uplighting trees in both the background and foreground. By lighting the trees and foliage they also highlighted their natural textures as well as casting interesting shadows. A blossom tree, lit with a single coloured LED luminaire, created a focal point and a playful element. Finally, with a large tree in the foreground put into silhouette with a luminaire placed behind the tree they added a sense of drama to the scheme. All light sources were concealed as much as possible to ensure the viewer would only see the lit effect, rather than being distracted by glare light points.

Many congratulations to Rachael Nicholls on winning the ’40under40 – Voices’ competition held on 23rd November 2016 at LuxLive 2016, and also to Shayne Grist who took part in the event.

Both Rachael and Shayne were asked to pitch a two-minute idea on the subject, “How can lighting save the world?”.

Rachael’s idea was to form a platform or organisation of lighting design professionals with the intention of making lighting design affordable and accessible for projects that benefit people.

In total six lighting designers took part, and after some tough questions from the judges, Rachael’s idea was selected as the winner!
